Her first television roles were two appearances as Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) on The ABC sitcom Roseanne as the character played by her mother. Her parents, however, did not let her perform until she reached the age of adulthood because of the impact stress might be able to have on their daughter. Perry acknowledged that she was not comfortable acting in high school. However, she began doing it to make friends at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry went on to New York, where she was offered small roles in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Homesickness then led Perry back to California, where theater jobs were available. Her mother and she appeared on Broadway as a couple for the play The Other Place, in 2013. Kevin McKidd, her father Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prizewinning drama Anna Christie alongside her in 2015. The character she played was a younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off series that was part of the CBS show The Big Bang Theory was another portrayal by her younger mother. The character was chosen by auditions, even though she had a close connection with it.
